I only learned of my connection to the Sheldon family after learning the identity of my biological father in 2018 then beginning work to trace my paternal roots. It has been a magical journey. I am hoping to learn even more about the Sheldon family as a result of admission to the group.

Ruby Sheldon was born on October 20, 1917 and moved to Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 32. In 1964, a challenge from her coworkers prompted her to learn to fly. In 1966, she went to work for Sun Valley Air Service at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix as an instructor and charter pilot. In 1969, she joined the U.S. Geologic Survey, Water Resources Division, where she flew camera and radar equipped aircraft performing surveys. She flew various aircraft including Cessna 180s, Douglas B-23, DC-3, OV-1, and T-33. Ruby's flight time included many hours of flying UH-1 helicopters from a floating ice research station 400 miles off the Northern coast of Alaska. In 1974, Ruby became the first woman in the United States to be rated as a Helicopter Instrument Flight Instructor.![]()
After her retirement, she returned to live in Arizona and remained active in aviation, participating regularly in the Powder Puff Derby and the Women's Air Race Classic trans-continental races. I want everyone to welcome and congratulate Lauren Sheldon. She is our newly appointed Social Media Administrator. She will be taking over the responsibilities from Wende Warren, who has been our acting admin.
Lauren will be responsible for our Facebook pages, Twitter account, and Instagram account. She will be collaborating with Kevin, our Webmaster, James, our SFAQ editor, and Wende, our Membership Chair.
Lauren is a person with experience using these media as forms of communication. She is bustling with ideas and creativity. SFA looks forward to her contributions.
