I’ve always loved this house when we’ve driven by it, but never knew this was called The Sheldon House. Here’s an article about this house: coolsandiegosights.com/2015/08/05/the-grand-extravagant-sheldon-house-in-east-village/comment-pag... ... See MoreSee Less

I wish it were in my neighborhood!!! 🧐

It looks sad where they moved it....

I just added it to Sheldon Places map on our website. sheldonfamily.org/sheldon-places/ Here's also an old picture of the house back when the family lived there. oac.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/kt1p3015xj/?brand=oac4

Skeltons in the Sheldon Family ClosetIf we dig deep enough into the history of any family, we are inevitably going to find an unsavory character of two who the family might wish we simply went away, never to see light again.Such is the case of Susanna (alternatively Susannah), the daughter of William Sheldon and Rebecca Scarlett (Scadlocke), born sometime around 1674 in the Province of Maine, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America, and her brother, Ephraim, born sometime around 1672.These siblings, Susanna more so than Ephraim, played a crucial role in one of the most horrendous events of the colonial period – The Salem Witch Hunt and Trials of 1691/92. Susanna, my 8th great-grandaunt, was one of the most active of the accusers, naming eleven individuals as “witches” as well as offering testimony in twenty-four depositions. Activities that led, directly and indirectly, to the deaths of ten individuals, nine hanged, one crushed to death. Among those who Susanna’s actions harmed the most were Rebecca (Towne) Nurse, my 8thgreat-grandmother, and Mary (Towne) Estey, Rebecca’s sister, my 8thgreat-grandaunt, both of whom she had accused, who, were then, tried, convicted, and hanged based, in large measure on her testimony. See: [salem.lib.virginia.edu/tag/sheldon_susannah.html](salem.lib.virginia.edu/tag/sheldon_susannah.html)for transcripts of records related to Susanna’s testimony. In addition to Rebecca and Mary, Susanna was a principal accuser, along with Mercy Lewis, of Rev. George Burroughs, whom the family may have known in Maine and may have been their minister. Rev. Burroughs had served for a time as minister of the Church of Christ in Salem Village, but the congregation never ordained him as their minister.Susanna fled Salem prior to the end of the trials, removing to Providence, Rhode Island Colony, Province of Massachusetts Bay, British Crown Colony where she apparently lived out her life, reportedly dying sometime around 1697, unmarried and childless. Some historians suggest that Susanna’s behavior was a manifestation of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder suffered as a result of events during King Philip’s War which forced the family to flee Maine when she was about two years of age, then, after returning to Maine in the 1680s, to flee again during King William’s War some years later. Whatever the cause, Susanna was clearly a very troubled individual who ruined many families by her actions.See: [salemwitchmuseum.com/locations/susanna-sheldon-home-site-of/](salemwitchmuseum.com/locations/susanna-sheldon-home-site-of/)for more about her life and role. ... Very interesting! I’m related to Mary and Rebecca on my mother’s side and Susanna Sheldon on my father’s side.

Disregard "Page Not Found" - use the embedded link to the museum.

I believe I’m also related to Susanna🙄

Do not know whether I’m related to Susanna because lack of information, but Rebecca Towne Nurse is my 9th gr grandmother

Congrats! I belong to the DAR. I see Phineas in their list, and we have him tagged in our tree as a DAR Patriot!

My aunt joined on Israel Sheldon of Southampton, MA.

Congratulations! 🎉

Really, the DAR actually helped you!? The old registrar for my chapter and I were nearly there when she was replaced by a new registrar who told me I was a liar and a fake. She wanted citations for everything the Sheldon Family Association had already provided or she wouldn't accept it. The chapter regent discovered that she lied about my whole application process up to that time being deleted from the system. She turned a good thing into a nightmare. With the former registrar we were only short one BC and one DC, which we planned to complete after 2020. Now with the new registrar it won't happen because she won't let it.

Cool! Phineas was my 5th Great Grandfather.

I’m hoping someone can solve this mystery, who was the clockmaker?

Oh, just listened a little more carefully to the video so now, I’m thinking that Jay Sheldon was the shopkeeper and not the clock maker.

As a J. Sheldon myself, I would absolute like to own this clock 😂

The SFA follows a Sheldon woman's line down to today if possible. That means if a Sheldon woman married many many generations ago (her surname wouldn't be Sheldon anymore), all of her descendants can be added to our database. That could be up to 12 generations! Most importantly, we've found many times where one Sheldon line marries into another Sheldon line, or even the same line. BUT without adding ALL the descendant generations, we wouldn't have made those great connections! Including women in your tree is a good practice. ... See MoreSee Less

Yes! Just a side note that my mother’s ancestry seemed to be well documented with 2 main Shuster books and - while my focus was originally on my paternal side - when I decided to begin bringing my mothers genealogy into my own, I found a lack of development into those females marrying into the Shuster line. My study then became focused on maternal lineages and I learned a great deal. I know my MtDNA as well, although a bit different than studying Y-DNA. And through Ancestry matches I can go back several generations. The maternal lines are very important and very interesting.

I descend five ways from Isaac, thanks to Sheldon lines marrying into each other.

Personally, I've got 2 patriots with the D.A.R. that are for the father of women that married into my Sheldon line. One of them was a new, unproven patriot. Women rule!

My direct family tree includes at three marriages between Sheldons and Clapps.

Intermarriage within the same family was common during the colonial period when the population was sparse. Marriages between first cousins often took place in New England - a practice still allowed in present day Massachusetts as well as several other states and commonwealths. Hence, it is highly likely one will find first cousins, cousins once removed, and so on married with your own lines.
