90th Birthday for Ella Rose
Sloughouse Inn, Sacramento County, California
On the occasion of her 90TH BIRTHDAY, the Sheldon Family Association presented a certificate of recognition to Ellen V. Cothrin Rose (“Ella”) on September 27, 2015 at the historic Sloughhouse Inn.
Ella established a Cousins Luncheon in 1980 to honor her mother, Kittie Sheldon Cothrin and the pioneers of the Cosumnes River Valley (Jared Dixon Sheldon & Catherine Rhoads, William Henry Daylor & Sarah Rhoads, Sebastian Keyser & Elizabeth Rhoads, Thomas & Elizabeth Rhoads, John & 1Matilda/2lMary Murray Rhoads, Daniel & Amanda Rhoads, and others).  Ella reads stories of the pioneer cousins not yet in her books.
Ella’s family, Annaclare & Jim Entrican hosted the lunch.  Large framed portraits of Jared & Catherine Sheldon meet everyone at the door as you enter. Betsy Hite’s staff at the Sloughhouse Inn served Chicken Marsala for lunch.  This year Ella continued with a reading of the second part of John P. Rhoads story, 1846 – 1866.  Her book “Jared Dixon Sheldon & William Henry Daylor – California Pioneers” published by the Elk Grove Historical Society this year, was originally printed in 1975 as “William Daylor – My Grandfather’s Friend”.  Proceeds from the book will be used to repair John Rhoads gravesite (tombstone) in the Sloughhouse Pioneer Cemetery.
After lunch, SFA representative, Kelley Woodward, presented the certificate, gave the following speech, and told stories of her own Southern California Sheldon families.
THE SHELDON FAMILY ASSOCIATION (SFA) SENDS GREETINGS AND THANKS FOR YOUR HISTORIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SFA, YOUR EFFORTS TO PRESERVE THE CALIFORNIA PIONEER COMMUNITY, AND FOR YOUR WRITTEN MEMORIAL OF GREAT GRANDFATHER, JARED DIXON SHELDON, AND HIS FRIEND WILLIAM DAYLOR.
THE SFA’S 76TH ANNUAL REUNION WAS IN SACRAMENTO THIS YEAR.  WE VERY MUCH ENJOYED OUR EXCURSION TO THE HISTORICAL PARK FOR A TOUR OF THE  ELK GROVE HOUSE & STAGE STOP AND TO SEE THE RHOADS SCHOOL AND SAN JOAQUIN TOWNSHIP JUSTICE COURT & JAIL THAT WERE MOVED THERE AND RESTORED.  IT WAS INTERESTING TO HEAR ABOUT TWO CURRENT RESTORATION PROJECTS (FOULKS HOUSE – – OLDEST RESIDENCE IN ELK GROVE & REESE SCHOOL – – THE LAST REMAINING ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE IN THE AREA).  THE NEXT DAY, WE EXPLORED THE SLOUGHHOUSE PIONEER CEMETERY AND HAD LUNCH WITH ELLA AT THE HISTORIC SLOUGHHOUSE INN.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ELLA …
